While you count the days...

While you count the days...

We cannot be the only ones counting the days until Spring arrives? 19 days, 3 hours, 5 minutes and 40 seconds. Incase you wonder. The sky has been a shade of winter grey for what seems like most of 2019. Although, if you have been driving around town the last few days some small signs of Spring can be found here and there. Trees are budding, flowers are blooming- the grass is taking back shades of green. Finally, color.

While we count the days, there are small projects you can do to get ready before the full blown "Spring Cleaning" madness kicks in.

  • The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and soda water. The bubbling action of the soda water combines with the abrasive texture of the salt to make a great cleaner.
  • The best way to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet it is to lay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar and let it set for an hour. The deposits will soften and become easier to remove.
  • Clean screens with a scrap of carpeting. It makes a powerful brush that removes all the dirt.
  • Clean windows with a rag and soapy water, and then dry them with another rag. You can also go to an auto-parts store and buy a windshield squeegee, which cleans very well.
  • If drapes are looking drab, take them out of the window, remove the hooks and run them through the air-fluff cycle in the dryer along with a wet towel (to draw off the dust) for 15 minutes. Hang them back in the windows immediately.
  • Clean the blades of a ceiling fan by covering them with a coat of furniture polish. Wipe off the excess and lightly buff.
  • Sometimes comforters, blankets and pillows don't need to be cleaned, but they do need to be aired out after a long winter in your closed-up home. Take them outside and hang them on a clothesline for a day.  (

Not ready to get in cleaning mood? There are so many FRESH fragrant scents that come with Spring, Pier 1 has a great Rosemary & Mint or Honeysuckle. Buy a new candle, plug in a wax burner or pick up a can of room spray. Change out throw pillows on your bed or couch- purple, yellow, blue and some neutrals will bring some cheer! Have you been wanting to paint a room? Not sure how far you want to go with color? Start in a hallway. Or even better, buy a 2x2 of drywall and a quart of paint. You can sample two or three colors without the commitment. Porter paint charges $5 for a sample pint!

As I sit here looking out the window I think of the pretty front doors, fresh landscaping and new front door mats that we will start seeing as we show houses in the next few weeks. We will miss winter boots and cute sweaters. We will NOT miss tissue and hot tea or all of the cold meds we have had to take this winter! 19 days, 2 hours, 51 minutes... Just sayin.

Until next time!!! HTG
